Clase Azul is a renowned tequila brand, celebrated for its luxurious presentation and high-quality production. Founded in 1997 by Arturo Lomelí, the brand emerged from Lomelí’s vision to create a tequila that embodied both exceptional flavor and artisanal craftsmanship. Initially, the project started with hand-painted ceramic bottles filled with tequila, but Lomelí soon focused on elevating the tequila itself to match the quality of the bottles. This shift led to Clase Azul becoming a symbol of luxury in the tequila world.
The production of Clase Azul tequila involves traditional, meticulous methods. It starts with the careful selection of 100% organic Blue Weber Agave, sourced from the highlands of Jalisco. The agave is harvested at peak maturity to ensure optimal sweetness. The hearts of the agave, known as piñas, are slow-cooked in traditional stone ovens (hornos) for 72 hours. This slow cooking process caramelizes the sugars in the agave, which contributes to the tequila's rich and sweet flavor profile.
After cooking, the agave is crushed, and the juice is extracted and fermented using a proprietary yeast strain unique to Clase Azul. The fermentation process is followed by double distillation in copper pot stills, which refines the tequila’s smoothness and purity. Depending on the variety, the tequila is aged in oak barrels for different periods. The aging process adds complexity and depth to the flavour, with the Reposado aged for 8 months, Añejo for 25 months, and Ultra for 5 years.
Each bottle of Clase Azul is a piece of art, hand-painted and handcrafted by artisans in Santa María Canchesda, Michoacán. The ceramic bottles are adorned with intricate designs, reflecting the rich pottery tradition of the region. These bottles are highly collectible and have become a symbol of the brand's luxury status.
Clase Azul is still owned by Clase Azul Spirits, with Arturo Lomelí continuing to lead the company. The brand has expanded its portfolio over the years, offering several expressions of tequila, each with distinct characteristics.
The tequila is made in Santa María Canchesda, a town in Michoacán, Mexico. This location is not only significant for its proximity to agave fields but also for its cultural heritage in pottery, which is reflected in the iconic Clase Azul bottles.
The Reposado, aged for 8 months, has an amber hue with rich caramel, vanilla, and toffee aromas, delivering a creamy and smooth palate with a long, warm finish. Bottle Size: 70cl
